Opportunity: Verified fact 6876370e-8916-4e2a-b846-e57381d8a9eb: WSE-3 packs 4 trillion transistors on a 46,225 mm² TSMC 5nm die — wafer-scale die-cost economics let Cerebras pitch as the only credible non-GPU training fabric, but verified fact 0dfcbe07 shows demand concentrated in a single Mideast sovereign buyer (G42 = 87% of H1 2024 revenue).
Cerebras is the wafer-scale outlier among AI-accelerator startups, with the WSE-3 a real differentiated SKU and an S-1 on file, but G42 customer-concentration risk dominates the story — diversifying customers (and getting cleared past CFIUS) is the gating question, not silicon.
SambaNova SN40L — reconfigurable dataflow AI accelerator → steady
Opportunity: Verified fact aba8b1d7 (3-tier 520MB SRAM + 64GB HBM + 1.5TB DDR) is genuinely differentiated for trillion-param serving — that is the architectural bet. Verified fact 3e64e6c9 (15–20% layoffs) and a stale 2021 valuation (307ec326, $5.1B) are the counter-signal: capital was raised pre-LLM-boom but momentum has stalled.
SambaNova has the most interesting memory-hierarchy story in the cohort but the weakest commercial momentum — large 2021 valuation hangover, 2024 layoffs. Effectively the cautionary tale of the AI-accelerator-startup wave: differentiated silicon does not by itself win once Groq-style developer pull and Cerebras-style sovereign deals take the oxygen.
Rebellions ATOM — AI inference accelerator → steady
Opportunity: Verified fact a8ffb758: KT (Korean telco) leading the Series B is itself a customer signal — Rebellions' opportunity is sovereign/Korean-stack AI inference, riding Samsung Foundry capacity rather than competing for TSMC slots. This is a distinct geographic wedge no US startup is occupying.
Rebellions is the Korea-sovereign-stack accelerator: Samsung-fab silicon (ATOM, fact 86b6f642), telco-anchored capital (KT-led $124M Series B). Less raw scale than Cerebras/Groq but the only meaningful non-US/non-China challenger with a real customer in the cap table.
Etched Sohu — transformer-only ASIC · weak signal
Opportunity: Verified fact 5fbb24a8 spells out the bet: Sohu is fixed-function transformer-only with no CNN/RNN support — the opportunity is that if attention-based transformers stay dominant for 3+ years, a hard-wired ASIC dominates GPUs on $/token; the risk is exactly that architectural lock-in. Founder note (19e409eb): Harvard dropouts Gavin Uberti & Chris Zhu.
Etched is the highest-conviction architectural bet in the cohort — burn-the-boats transformer ASIC with marketed 20× H100 throughput claims. Position is high-beta: huge upside if Llama/GPT-style attention remains the dominant primitive, dead silicon the moment a non-attention architecture displaces it.
Tenstorrent Wormhole n150 / n300 dev cards — AI accelerator PCIe dev card · weak signal
Opportunity: Verified fact 7cb21e61 (Jim Keller CEO from Jan 2023) + 1ff23913 (n150 $999 / n300 $1,399) means Tenstorrent has uniquely picked the developer-on-ramp wedge: priced like a consumer GPU, paired with Keller-credibility — this is the only AI-accelerator startup attacking the 'I want to own the silicon, not rent inference' demand layer.
Wormhole is the developer-accessibility play of the accelerator-startup cohort — $999 silicon plus the Jim Keller halo. Whether this converts into commercial volume vs. staying a hobbyist/research product is the open question; pricing alone is a deliberately differentiated GTM versus Cerebras/Groq/SambaNova.
Tenstorrent TT-Metalium — open-source AI accelerator SDK · weak signal
Opportunity: Apache-2.0 SDK with ~1.2k stars is Tenstorrent's wedge against CUDA lock-in — the broader CUDA-moat is the single biggest unsolved problem the entire AI-accelerator-startup category faces.
TT-Metalium is the only A2-/license-friendly open-source software stack from this cohort with public GitHub traction. Star count is modest (1.2k) so the bet is unproven, but strategically it is the right shape — the accelerator-startup category dies or lives on whether a non-CUDA stack ever attracts a real developer flywheel.
